HOW TO GET MORE INSTAGRAM FOLLOWERS

Get engaged and get more Instagram followers using our quick and easy guide.

By Katy Moody

Can you tell I’m always on an Instagram research mission? Everytime I research or test something out for one of our clients, I’m always excited to share it so that others can benefit from it too.

Now, I like to put Ambitious Instagrammers into three categories: the white hats (I’m a big Scandal fan), the grey hats and the red hats.

The white hats want to grow their platforms and do so by posting good content, using valuable hashtags and engaging and collaborating with other Instagrammers.

The grey hats want to be good but very often fall under false promise spells online. The ‘follow and unfollow’ techniques, the Instagram pods, the direct messaging spam, techniques that work short term but never really give you any long term engagement.

Then the red hats. These guys do not give a sh*t. First thing they do when they open an Instagram account is head straight over to fiverr and see how many instabots they can flood their followers with. (By the way I have done this before, I like to try everything before I tell you it’s rubbish.) Then they buy some likes, buy some comments and they have a fully functioning fake instagram account.

So to stay on the white hat side but still grow your account faster than others it’s so important to be engaging with other accounts, liking and commenting on posts and growing your audience.

But what are your limits? There are constant horror stories about instagram accounts being blocked for over usage and too many likes, and although Instagram no longer has any direct guidelines on this. Here’s what we found.

  • Instagram gives you around 60 interactions per hour to play around with, any more and your likes may stop registering and then a temporary block may be added. (We have managed to get up to 100 likes per hour but this was on a trial account and we wouldn’t want to risk your business account.)
  • In total the number which is circulated round the industry is 1440 actions per day. An action being a like, a comment, a direct message or a share. So don’t get carried away or the algorithm may recognise you as a bot or spam account
  • Also Instagram is tracking the times you post, therefore if you start posting one after another, the algorithm may assume that you’ve been hacked and block your account.

What we’d suggest:

Try to interact with 100 accounts per day. This could be through liking posts, adding comments or sending direct messages. We do this in a number of different ways.

  • Every new follower that follows one of our clients receives a personalised Direct Message. Not only does this encourage them to keep following you. It also builds up more of a rapport meaning they’re more likely to like and comment on your photographs (See why this is important in the algorithm update.)
  • We pick a different hashtag each day and go through liking and commenting on accounts. But naturally, we want to have meaningful conversations with potential customers so commenting ‘cool’ isn’t going to get us anywhere. We add useful comments with questions and like posts that our clients would want to support.

This keeps you well under the danger zone, allows you to start real conversations and connect with potential customers.

Know your limits. Keep engaging and you’ll be well on the way to building a successful Instagram account.
